Labiplasty Risk Profile
Risks and Complications of Labiaplasty in Sydney
Labiaplasty reduces the size or reshapes the labia minora for functional (e.g., discomfort during exercise or intercourse) or cosmetic reasons. It is a delicate procedure performed on sensitive tissue with specific risks.
This page provides general and specific information only. Individual risks vary depending on your age, general health, smoking status, diabetes, and the extent of tissue removal. A detailed, personalised risk assessment will be provided during your consultation with Dr Kelly Thornbury in her Sydney rooms.
Important AHPRA note: All cosmetic surgery carries risks and requires a recovery period. Results vary from patient to patient and cannot be guaranteed. A mandatory cooling-off period applies before proceeding.
General Risks of Plastic Surgery
Refer to our General Risks of Plastic Surgery in Sydney page for full details on anaesthesia-related complications (including heart attack, stroke, chest infection, death, DVT/PE, sore throat/breathing difficulty, nausea), wound infection (higher in smokers and diabetics), heavy bleeding, poor or delayed wound healing, skin necrosis, wound dehiscence, bruising and swelling, haematoma/seroma/oedema, pain and discomfort, allergic reactions, altered sensation, adverse scarring, need for revision surgery, and psychological impact.
Specific Risks of Labiaplasty
- Asymmetry in size, shape, or contour of the labia
- Over-resection (excessive tissue removal) leading to dryness, irritation, tightness, or painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Under-resection (insufficient tissue removal) requiring further surgery
- Changes in sensation (temporary or permanent numbness, hypersensitivity, or reduced feeling)
- Wound dehiscence or delayed healing
- Infection or abscess formation
- Scarring or scar tightness that may cause discomfort
- Persistent pain, swelling, or irritation
- Dissatisfaction with aesthetic or functional outcome
- Need for revision surgery
Factors that significantly increase risks Smoking, diabetes, and poor wound care increase the chance of infection and healing complications in this sensitive area. I will thoroughly assess these during your consultation.
Recovery Considerations Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common for several weeks. You will need to avoid sexual activity, tampons, and strenuous exercise for at least 6 weeks. Regular follow-up in our Sydney clinic is essential. Signs of complications (increasing pain, redness, pus, or fever) should be reported immediately.
